Jan 12 2011 - 12:00am - 6:59pm
Hālau Kū Māna
The State of Hawaii officially launched a yearlong celebration of the United Nations International Year of Forests on January 12, 2011.
The U.S. Forest Service, Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife, Hawaii Conservation Alliance, Hawaii Nature Center and Hālau Kū Māna Public Charter School invited guests young and old to their beautiful forest campus for an afternoon of dance, song, story and food.
As part of the celebration, participants donated hand made forest products to the Forest Exchange Box. This special box made from Koa wood, which grows no where else on earth, will be on display across the nation as part of Project Learning Tree and the American Forest Foundation's effort to raise awareness about the importance of forest and highlight the connection between healthy forests and healthy communities.

100th Anniversary of the Weeks Act
Mar 1 2011 (All day)
USDA Forest Service
From the USDA Forest Service website, "The Forest Service is celebrating the 100th anniversary of one of the most successful land conservation efforts in the U.S. The Weeks Act was signed into law in 1911, after a decade-long debate about the role of the federal government in protecting forestlands. The Weeks Act, named after Massachusetts Congressman John Weeks, allowed the use of federal funding to purchase forest land for conservation. The Weeks Act appropriated $9 million to purchase 6 million acres of land in the eastern United States.
The success of the Weeks Act and its contribution to the conservation of natural resources in the eastern United States has been enormous. Over 40 National Forests have been created. In addition to the 780,000 acre White Mountain National Forest, such forests as the Green Mountain, Pisgah, Allegheny, George Washington, Ottawa and many others were created, often incorporating cut over and burned lands. Today they are valuable forests, providing clean water, wildlife, recreation, forest products and a variety of other goods and services.
In 2011 we celebrate the centennial of the Weeks Act and explore what it took to reach a broad consensus on such an important issue, what the results were and what the next hundred years of the Weeks Act hold."

Mar 26 2011 - 9:00am - 4:00pm
Lone Star College-Montgomery
Hosted by the Texas Forest Service, Lone Star College-Montgomery, Texas Parks & Wildlife, U.S. Forest Service and the International Year of Forests, the Texas Wildlife and Woodland Expo is Saturday, March 26, 2011.
Want to get your family back outdoors and reconnected with nature — and learn a little bit in the process? Texas Wildlife and Woodland Expo & Spring Fling has got you covered.
At Expo & Spring Fling, it doesn't matter if you've got one tree or thousands of them. You can learn how to better manage your family forest, attract more wildlife to your property and protect your home and property from wildfire. You can get tips for landscaping your yard and installing a rainwater collection system. You can find out the best methods for restoring native grasses and managing brush on your plot of land. You can even pick up some pointers when it comes to bird watching and nature photography.
While you're there, make sure you take one of our free classes — we've got them both inside and outdoors including some held right in the middle of the trees at nearby Jones State Forest — watch a live demonstration and stop to chat with our exhibitors. And don't forget to stop by our Family Adventure Zone, where your kids can climb a rock wall, take a peek at a live screech owl and learn how to kayak.
At Expo & Spring Fling, we want you to play for a day ... but learn for a lifetime.

Constructing an Old Time Charcoal Pit
Mar 26 2011 - 10:00am - 12:00pm
Land Between the Lakes’ Homeplace - Golden
Hardwood charcoal was an essential ingredient in the production of iron throughout the early days of this region’s past. This “baked” wood was also used in local blacksmith shops as a fuel to heat metals in order to shape useable items. Today we will be constructing a small scale charcoal pit on the farm. Once lit, it will burn for twelve days producing high quality charcoal. Program free with HP admission.

Congressional Fly-In
Mar 30 2011 - 6:00pm - 8:00pm
U.S. Capitol Building
On March 29-30, Tree Farmers from across the country will travel to Washington, D.C. to meet with their Members of Congress. They will brief them about the importance of family forests and what the challenges are for the individuals and families who own and manage America’s woodlands.
The American Forest Foundation’s (AFF) efforts at the national policy level, and with partners all over the country, focus on securing markets for wood from American Tree Farm System® certified forests, securing incentives and sound tax policies that encourage sustainable forest management, and making sure more Americans understand the urgency of helping family forest owners keep their forests healthy and intact for future generations.
The March 2011 Congressional fly-in will focus on three key areas to help family forest owners:
1. Green Building Policies. There are both environmental and economic benefits to using wood products in green building.
2. Forests in the Farm Bill. While we cannot expect family forest programs to be immune from budget cuts, federal funding for conservation and forestry programs in USDA farm bill programs help many family forest owners with on-the-ground management and tools to better manage their forests, including minimizing insect infestations or wildfire threats.
3. Tax Policy. While AFF helped secure a two-year patch to the estate tax at the end of last year, tax reforms are still needed to ensure family forest owners can protect their forest heritage and continue to do right by their land.
Tree Farmers need to be recognized and rewarded for the environmental and community benefits we all enjoy--including wood and paper products, clean air, clean water, wildlife, green space, and recreation. If you would like to join our grassroots network to help get support for policies that benefit Tree Farmers, please visit www.familyforestaction.org or contact Melissa Harden at mharden@forestfoundation.org, (202) 463-2456 or Dan Conant at dconant@forestfoundation.org, (202) 463-2431.

The first place winners in each grade are made into billboards and placed along major transportation routes near the winners' homes.
Over 8,000 students in grades 1-8 annually take part in the KNDC poster contest. KNDC is North Dakota's largest and longest running poster contest in the state. KNDC celebrates its 42nd year in 2010!
The NDFS I&E Coordinator serves as the co-chair of the statewide KNDC Poster Contest along with Jean Monroe, ND Department of Transportation.

Earth Day
Apr 22 2011 (All day)
From the official Earth Day website, "For over 40 years, Earth Day—April 22—has inspired and mobilized individuals and organizations worldwide to demonstrate their commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.
The first Earth Day, on April 22, 1970, activated 20 million Americans from all walks of life and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. The passage of the landmark Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many other groundbreaking environmental laws soon followed. Growing out of the first Earth Day, Earth Day Network (EDN) works with over 22,000 partners in 192 countries to broaden, diversify and mobilize the environmental movement. More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.
But Earth Day Network does not stop there. All of EDN’s activities, whether greening schools or promoting green economic policies at home and abroad, inform and energize populations so they will act to secure a healthy future for themselves and their children. With its partner organizations, EDN provides civic engagement opportunities at the local, state, national and global levels. At every turn, EDN works to broaden the definition of "environment" to include all issues that affect our health, our communities and our environment, such as greening deteriorated schools, creating green jobs and investment, and promoting activism to stop air and water pollution."

Arbor Day
Apr 29 2011 (All day)
From the Arbor Day Foundation, "Arbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care. Founded by J. Sterling Morton in 1872, it's celebrated on the last Friday in April.
An Arbor Day celebration can be as large or as small as you want to make it. Your Arbor Day can be a few neighbors gathering to plant trees in a park behind your homes or at a nearby school. It can be a week-long regional festival with activities for thousands of kids and adults. Arbor Day can be a single class project or an event for the whole school, an inner city neighborhood planting trees in a vacant lot, or a huge citywide or statewide celebration."

Arbor Day Celebration - Tree Planting for Climate Change
May 7 2011 - 9:00am
Courthouse - Sparta
The community of Sparta will rally together to plant over 200 trees of diverse species thanks to a grant from Polar Bears International to promote climate change awareness and sustainable forestry. The city pre-emptively removed ash trees anticipating future devastating damage from a nearby Emerald Ash Borer infestation. This project will help sustain the community's tree canopy.
As part of the overall project, three high school girls entered the national Project Polar Bear contest and were selected as finalists. These teenagers' effort, and far reaching promotions during the last six months, generated HUGE awareness in local schools and to this community of 9,000 of the importance of planting trees for climate change and the significance of recycling. National Walk in the Woods Day
May 21 2011 (All day)
Nationwide
Save the date! Saturday, May 21 is National Walk in the Woods Day. The American Forest Foundation is helping develop and facilitate a variety of U.S. celebrations for 2011 International Year of Forests throughout the year. This year, Saturday, May 21 is National Walk in the Woods Day, and we invite you to share this day with others. Consider helping youth and adults alike to discover a forest and learn about its importance by participating in, or leading, a “walk in the woods.”
Here are some ideas:
-
Discover your forest! Visit a nearby woodland, city or state park, or a national forest.
-
If you own woodland, invite your family, neighbors, elected officials, or other members of your community to join you for a walk on your property.
-
Take your children, grandchildren, or family/friends/neighbors’ children for a walk in the woods. Conduct an informal educational activity, for example using Project Learning Tree’s “Connecting Kids to Nature” activity series.
-
Help a school improve its grounds by planting trees with students and teachers; involve a local youth club.
-
Go camping, or just step outside and enjoy trees and all that they give us!

Nationwide Celebration
National Get Outdoors Day is a new annual event to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun. Participating partners will offer opportunities for American families to experience traditional and non-traditional types of outdoor activities. Prime goals of the day are reaching first-time visitors to public lands and reconnecting our youth to the great outdoors.
Participants from federal agencies, nonprofit organizations and the recreation industry are again teaming up to host the second annual National Get Outdoors Day (GO Day) to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun at sites across the nation. On Saturday, June 12, these diverse partners will offer opportunities for American families to experience traditional and non-traditional types of outdoor activities. Prime goals of the day are reaching currently underserved populations and first-time visitors to public lands, and reconnecting our youth to the great outdoors.
Each GO Day event will offer a mix of information centers and “active fun” areas – places where guests, and especially kids, can use a fishing pole, go geocaching, help pitch a tent and more. The sites will provide photo opportunities with characters like Smokey Bear, Woodsy Owl and other interesting creatures. Many sites also feature areas that focus on other aspects of healthy living, including sustainability and good nutrition. In addition to the GO Day events, participants will be invited to nearby follow-up activities called EchO events occurring throughout the summer, which include introductions to mountain biking and fly-fishing, hikes with rangers to see wildlife, kayaking and rafting and much more.

TREES: SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE
Throughout history trees have been revered and seen as sacred symbols of power, wisdom, healing, fertility and even life itself. The World Tree or Tree of Life is found in virtually every culture and religion, symbolizing the union of heaven and earth and the interconnection of life. Trees teach us to grow our roots in fertile soil and reach for our dreams while reminding us to live in balance and harmony.
Trees are anchors of most ecosystems, stabilizing soil and preventing erosion while filtering pollutants from rain and ground water. Worldwatch Institute estimates at least 321 million acres of trees need to be planted just to restore and maintain the productivity of soil and water resources. Trees produce half of the atmosphere’s oxygen, while the average tree absorbs of 13 pounds CO2 each year. Shade from trees can reduce utility bills for air conditioning by 15 to 50 percent.
HOW COMMUNITREE CAME TO BE
Amy Martin, executive director of Earth Rhythms, relates: “This event is an outgrowth over the group’s long-time relationship with several 100+ year old elm trees behind the Bath House Cultural Center, where we have held many festivals. When the trees were cut down due to ill health, Earth Rhythms commemorated one by having artist Julia Schloss paint a butterfly on the stump. It was eventually cut off and the slab turned into an art table for the facility. Another tree was honored with a “Goodbye to a Tree” service before it was cut down. Both were so well received that CommuniTREE was a natural outgrowth.”
CommuniTREE is made possible with support from Earth Rhythms Legacy Underwriters and the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs.
Admission is free.

International Year of Forest - Society for Conservation Biology Proclamation
Sep 30 2011 - 9:00am - 5:00pm
New York City
The 21st century is a time of unprecedented demands on forests. If forests are going to continue to sustain humans’ basic needs, society must adopt science-based conservation stewardship, and new policies to respond to rising demands for the products and services provided by forests. New measures are needed to halt the decline of forests regionally and globally, and to encourage broader tracking, accountability, and reporting metrics on forest degradation and deforestation. Additionally, because many protected areas currently are protected in name only, they will require appropriate and relevant policy interventions, enforcement and local incentives to ensure that they are truly protected.
Recognizing the demands placed on forests and the need to sustainably manage them, the United Nations prepared a resolution on forests adopted by the General Assembly in its quest towards sustainable management of forest ecosystems and associated resources. The Society for Conservation Biology, the world's largest professional conservation society, has prepared a general review of forests globally that is complete with 12 recommendations on measures that should be considered by UN member nations if global forest accords are going to be effective in halting deforestation and forest degradation as well as associated global warming. The proclamation will be released at events this year, including the upcoming September meeting of the UN General Assembly to discuss progress on the International Year of Forests (NYC, date not yet released).
